What Is the CPUC Self-Generation Incentive Program?

The CPUC Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP) offers special rebates for qualifying solar panel systems installed on the customer’s side of the utility meter. To be eligible for the program as a residential solar customer, you must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Live in a single-family home and home is subject to resale restrictions
  • Live in a single-family home and already participated in or have reserved incentives in the Single-Family Affordable Solar Homes for Disadvantaged Communities – Single-Family Solar Homes Program
  • Live in an apartment considered low-income housing that includes at least five rental units, and must either be located in a Disadvantaged Community or at least 80% of apartment building residents have incomes at or below 60% Area Median Income
  • Live in an apartment and your property has already participated in the Solar on Multifamily Affordable Housing Program or the Multifamily Affordable Solar Housing Program
  • Live anywhere in California Indian Country

For non-residential customers interested in taking advantage of the SGIP, the following criteria must be met:

  • You have experienced two or more utility Public Safety Power Shut-Offs, or be located in a tier 2 or 3 High Fire Threat District and serve customers that are in Disadvantaged Communities, and
  • You must be one of the following entities
    • Police station
    • Fire station
    • Emergency response provider
    • Emergency operations center
    • 911 call center
    • Medical facility
    • Private and public utilities provider
    • Jail or prison
    • Utility designated PSPS assistance center
    • Cooling center
    • Homeless shelter
    • Grocery store, supermarket, or corner stores with <$15 million in annual gross receipts
    • Independent living centers and food banks
